Well the season is in its third week now and the match cards are slowly starting to filter through. Most of the match results so far have been predicable though there have been one or two interesting ones. Southport ‘A’ have returned to the first division after a few years absence and had a good 6:4 victory over St Teresa’s ‘B’. Bernhard Frank won his two singles for Southport and Gordon Woods the same for St Teresa’s. The match was won solely on the doubles with the Southport team taking the two highly fought competitive sets.

Formby TTC ‘A’ started their campaign to retain this year’s championship with an impressive 10:0 win over Formby HT ‘D’. I don’t think that this will be the only whitewash they dole out this year but everyone will be out to take a few points off them. Argyle ‘A’ started the season with a 9:1 over Formby HT ‘C’ with John Williams of the Formby side picking up the single point to allay the whitewash. Julian Quirk, Formby HT ‘A’ started his season well by taking all three points against Formby TTC ‘C’. He must be pleased with his win over Adam Choi as Adam has improved dramatically since being at university. Will Roberts did the same as Julian by taking three of Formby TTC ’C’ seven with winning both his singles and the doubles.

The two Argyle sides in the second division Argyle ‘B’ and Argyle ‘C’ started the season with 9:1 wins as did the third division sides of Formby TTC ‘F’ and Formby TTC ‘G’. It’s interesting to note that Argyle ‘B’ team and Formby TTC ‘G’ are teams of veterans and Argyle ’C’ and Formby TTC ‘F’ are teams of juniors. I’ll be watching the results of their respective matches this half of the season and I can’t wait to compare the results of the matches after Christmas. It will be interesting to see whether veteran experience or youthful exuberance will win the day.
